If there was no furniture

Furniture seems so overlooked to me, something we take for granted – that it will be there for us as we walk into a space designed for people. We stand, sit, lie down, or lounge as the furniture unconsciously dictates how we will behave in a certain area.

What if, one day, all the furniture were gone? Our only options would be standing, sitting on the ground, or maybe squatting. When you think about it in the context of a furniture rapture, it becomes comical and wildly apparent how much we rely on furniture in every aspect of our lives. We would miss the function, but also the beauty – the aesthetic.

A well-designed room has a way of drawing you into it. Architects and Designers have that expertise; they are trained to elicit emotions through space layout, colors, textures, and materials. Furniture is a huge piece of the design puzzle, and it has the power to dictate the movement, posture, and feelings of those who interact with it. For those in our audience who are not design professionals (like me!), and might be reading this, I implore you to pay attention to each piece of furniture you encounter throughout your day and how it makes you feel.

I’m curious: would you change anything? Do any pieces of furniture make you feel strong emotions? Do you find yourself gravitating to certain spaces at home or in your workplace, and why?

Let’s start a conversation about furniture, it deserves our attention and praise!
